Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute

Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program

The Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute is an educational program of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center. It offers formal training to clinicians and professionals, with advanced degrees in their fields, who want to explore the entire spectrum of psychoanalytic theory and technique.  We seek applicants with intellectual curiosity, maturity, and integrity.

An Academic Program is available for professionals, in mental health and other fields, who are interested in the formal training, without becoming a psychoanalyst.

The Clinical Program is designed for the mental health professional whose intention is to become a psychoanalyst.

Accepted candidates will join a monthly Pre-Matriculation course during the year(s) prior to the start of the next class.

Inquiries regarding training are encouraged early in professional career development. For complete details about the training program, please consult the brochure and contact the Center via email at: [email protected].

TRAINING ANALYSIS
A training analysis is the personal analysis that occurs during candidacy. It serves as a cornerstone of analytic education. The experience of the candidate's own analytic process, in conjunction with didactic seminars and supervision of his/her cases, provides an essential base for integrating the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. It increases sensitivity to the workings of unconscious forces and facilitates emotional growth. Analytic matters are entirely confidential.

  • Candidates may select any training analyst from the current approved list of training analysts. In some cases, a waiver may be sought by the institute for a personal analysis of a candidate by an analyst who is not a TA.
  • It is strongly recommended that a training analysis, meeting four or five times per week, begin at least six months prior to the start of the first year of classes. When this is not possible, the training analysis must start before the candidate's first classes in the Fall of the first year of training
  • The training analysis is expected to continue well into the period of supervision of clinical work, ordinarily with an overlap of no less than three years. The duration of the analysis is determined by the training analyst and candidate, in accordance with the Minimum Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

CURRICULUM
Candidates attend classes for four years. Required supervised and independent clinical work may require additional time to complete. Course work introduces the candidate to both historical and contemporary points of view of psychoanalysis, challenging the candidate to integrate multiple theories and perspectives. Candidates will develop an appreciation for continual learning from patients, readings, and peers.

The curriculum is organized into five tracks: Theory, Psychopathology, Development, Theory of Technique and Continuous Case Conference.

The academic year consists of three trimesters or approximately nine months. Classes occur, in small seminar groups, on Fridays from 12:15 pm to 5:15 pm. Our small faculty is augmented by respected visiting teachers from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and the East Coast, who teach on occasional Saturdays.

After completion of the four-year didactic curriculum, candidates are required to attend continuous case conferences until graduation.

SUPERVISED CLINICAL WORK
Sufficient clinical immersion during the didactic seminars is crucial for a good analytic education. Each candidate undertakes supervised clinical work with the authorization of the Progression Committee. Regular meetings with an OPI/APsaA approved supervisor are to begin by the start of classes; supervisory sessions are conducted weekly. Supervised cases are seen a minimum of four times weekly. Candidates are encouraged to have as many concurrent cases as possible and to work with three or more supervising analysts.

Graduation requires the satisfactory supervised analyses of three adults, including both genders and one low fee. Cases must show development of a psychoanalytic process to be counted toward graduation.
