Contemporary Psychoanalytic Field Theory:  Stories, Dreams, and Metaphor

with S. Montana Katz, PhD

This program will begin with a brief historical overview of the development of field concepts in psychology and psychoanalysis.  The theory and technique of the three principal forms of psychoanalytic field theory will be described.  The three forms originate with the work of Madeleine and Willy Baranger in South America, the Bionian field theory of Antonino Ferro in Europe, and, the results of the work of Harry Stack Sullivan, Edgar Levenson and others on the development of interpersonal psychoanalysis in the United States.  Theoretical and clinical implications of the three models will be explored and compared.  The use of psychoanalytic field concepts as a means to constructing a general framework for different psychoanalytic perspectives will be discussed at the end of the program.

Educational Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. describe the theory and clinical technique of three models of psychoanalytic field theory
  2. apply the techniques of psychoanalytic field theory in their clinical practices
  3. compare the different techniques discussed in the program.
