Mind Meeting Brain

Instructors: Nancy Winters, MD & Lee Shershow, MD

In this eighth iteration of the “Mind Meeting Brain” course at OPC, we will attempt to capture the expanding reciprocal influence between psychoanalysis and neuroscience. Neuroscientists are asking psychoanalytic questions, and psychoanalysts/psychotherapists are more interested in what new knowledge might inform their practice. Led by Mark Solms, a psychoanalyst and neuroscience researcher, the field of neuropsychoanalysis is coming into its own. Reading from Dr. Solms’ 2015 book The Feeling Brain: Selected Papers on Neuropsychoanalysis, we will focus on special areas of interest, including memory, emotions, and consciousness/unconscious. Psychoanalytic case illustrations will help us explore these cross-currents.

Educational Objectives
At the end of the class, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss two areas of neuroscience research relevant to psychoanalysis and psychotherapy
2. Describe a specific application of neuroscience to his/her practice
