ion: Can prejudices be understood psychoanalytically? Are d
ifferent kinds of people attracted to different kinds of prejudices? Elisab
eth Young-Bruehl’s insightful and original 1996 study suggests an approach
that distinguishes between different types of prejudices, the people who ho
ld them, the social and political settings that promote them, and the human
needs they fulfill. This course will look at the unfortunately all-too per
tinent topic of ethnocentrism, homophobia and white supremacy through Young
-Bruehl’s understanding of the hysterical, obsessional and narcissistic cha
racter.
