Meaning(s) of Money

with Julie Rosenberg, MD

Money has remained one of the last taboos in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic thought.  While sex and perversion shimmer in the spotlight, money lurks in the shadows of the frame, undiscussed because of our own anxiety over its meaning.  In this course, we will consider the evolution of psychoanalytic thinking about money and fees, the particular clinical dynamics that can emerge for therapist and patient (i.e. fantasies of separation/merger, dialectics of love and hate, envy and greed), and how gender, race and socioeconomic status can impact our understanding.  Through readings and shared clinical experiences, we will explore techniques for using this vital aspect of the frame to expand and deepen a therapeutic process.

Learning Objectives: The participant will be able to
1.  Understand the evolution of psychoanalytic thought about money and fees.
2.  Consider unique dynamics that can emerge for therapist and patient around money.
3.  Explore how gender, race and socioeconomic status/background can impact our perspective and comfort in discussing money.
