Race, Class, and Culture in Psychotherapy

with Neil Altman, PhD

We will consider race, class and culture from a psychoanalytic perspective, and why attention to these social categories is important in psychotherapy.  RELEVANT THEORY WILL BE PRESENTED, ALONG WITH CASE ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE PRESENTER AND PARTICIPANTS.              

Educational Objectives:     
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:

1.   Discuss race, social class and culture from a psychoanalytic perspective.
2.   Discuss how race, social class and culture enter the process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
3.   Discuss possible interventions when cultural differences enter the process of psychotherapy.

Neil Altman is faculty at the William Alanson White Institute in New York, and at the Ambedkar University of Delhi, India.  He is editor emeritus of Psychoanalytic Dialogues: the International Journal of Relational Perspectives.  He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Child Psychotherapy, the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and the International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies.  He is author of the Analyst in the Inner City: race, class, and culture through a psychoanalytic lens (routledge, 2010) Psychoanalysis in Times of Accelerating Cultural Change: spiritual globalization (routledge, 2015) and co-author of Relational Child Psychotherapy (other press, 2002), as well as numerous journal articles.  He is in the private practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in New York city.
