The therapeutic alliance is the aspect of the treatment relationship which is a collaborative and mutual partnership, in which both participants exercise shared authority and mutual regard, in which we determine together what we will do, how will we do it, what will our shared goals be, and what will be the terms by which we will engage. This aspect to the therapeutic relationship is its bedrock, which sustains and directs us even when our work is awash with love and hate, fear and dread.
